Shawna & Shane {E-Session}

I loved working with Shawna and Shane!  They both have an awesome sense of humour and we spent a good portion of the session laughing.  We debated who out of the three of us is the most clumsy, with all of us fighting hard for that title throughout their session.  Shane took the prize though this time around.  I was glad they could relate to always having ‘mystery bruises’, a knack for walking into anything in their presence and falling while doing regular tasks like walking.  They helped me feel normal – thanks guys!  They brought their adorable Yorkshire Terrier, Cash, along for a few snaps.  He didn’t quite know what to make of it, but I think he looked so cute!  Just wait till part two of this session where he sports an adorable Burberry style sweater.  He is quite the fashionista and up on all the latest puppy wear trends.

Here are just a few teasers from the first part of our session.  Enjoy!

You guys are SO cute !!

Nice work Kim, I love those cliffs.

SeanApril 14, 2010 - 4:56 am

I really think Johanna spoke it perfectly here. These two are, and your images as well of course, are just so genuine. Best word I can think of. They’re genuine and unscripted life, and it’s so joyous. I love these. Very real. Adore the location too. I want to shoot there.

JohannaApril 14, 2010 - 3:04 am

I don´t know why, but these pictures just spoke to my heart. They are just filled with “everyday” and long lasting love. I love the colours and the light in the photos. Thank you for sharing so many beautiful pictures with the world, Kim.

🙂 I can’t choose between the two either! (I’m a terrible decider ;D) But I really like the last photo!!

Awwww back to reality ….

Darren and I are hard workers.  We both have big dreams, big goals, and some of these goals and dreams require a fair chunk of change.  So we work …. A LOT.  It is one of the qualities in Darren I admire the most.  These days it seems like a strong work ethic is not as common of a trait as it has been in the past.

Since leaving my job at the government and becoming a full-time photographer I have become way better at my work / life balance.  For the first time in a long time I have had time just for me.  It’s weird, but I like it.  At first when I had any ‘free-time’ I just felt guilty and didn’t know what to do with myself.  I kept saying to myself, “stop being lazy, you should be doing something.”  So I would find ways to be busy and productive.  Now I have realized that these moments are few and far between and that I should just enjoy them.  Do something for myself.  Visit with friends I don’t see often enough.  Go have tea with my mom, just because.  Bake cookies.  Read in the bath.  Why not ?!  I am learning that this time is not only valuable for my well-being (and those around me!), but essential.  It is essential for my business that I continue loving what I do, and stay fresh with ideas and creativity.  Working my ass off was not fostering that state of mind.  Me being burnt out, was not helping anyone.  Now that I have gained this ‘perspective’ I try to encourage Darren to stop once in awhile and take some time just for him, or just for us.  To have fun and enjoy life.  He LOVES playing the drums and bass guitar and working on his car – a gorgeous 1971 Datusn 510 that he has fully restored himself.   He also happens to love spending time relaxing with me.  Who wouldn’t ?!  I am pretty awesome 😉

We both decided the other day that we should have a relaxing long weekend.  One that involved sleeping in, sipping coffee (vanilla hazlenut is our current fave), going for walks, and not spending time glued to the computer or T.V.  We knew that if we stayed home that this would be a challenge.  We always end up doing something.  So we decided to get away.  Not far, but to one of our favourite places, Brentwood Bay Lodge.  Darren and I had ate in the pub numerous times, but stayed here for the first time on our wedding night.  We became instant fans!  This is a luxury resort and spa.  This venue has it all.  Stunning ocean views, gorgeous west coast architecture, fabulous fine dining and pub fare, and a spa that I didn’t want to leave.  Darren and I had a couples massage the morning after our wedding and it was one of the most amazing things we have ever done together.  I honestly did not want it to end !!  I can’t even describe how incredible it was, but we will be going back for our anniversary and years to come I am sure.

This place pays attention to the details and is all about customer service.   We were walked to our room by the front desk attendant, who made sure we had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable.  In our room there was a personal letter welcoming us and wishing us a wonderful stay with two yummy oatmeal raisin cookies.  There was aromatherapy pillow mist by our bed, along with ear plugs.  There was a cute bottle of wine to apologize for the construction that was possibly going to be happening while we were there, although we never heard it.  Candles, bath salts … I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.  I am a fanatic for this place!  I think I place so much value on establishments that go above and beyond client expectations as it is the way I want to run my business as well.

Here are some fun photos of our little get away.  I can’t wait to go back !!

Darren’s “blue steel”  Zoolander expression …

SeanApril 8, 2010 - 6:50 pm

Read your post last night, and spent too much time on their site when I should’ve been sleeping pondering how I can pull this off for Jen as a surprise sometime soon. You two inspire me 🙂

Mark LedinghamApril 8, 2010 - 4:53 pm

Hey, now that’s a pretty good looking couple there! Hope you guys had a a great time, Kim. 😉

Kim SpearsApril 8, 2010 - 12:17 am

I just talked to Jackie and she is AWESOME !! I can’t wait to meet her 🙂 I knew you would relate to this post 😉

JennyApril 7, 2010 - 1:19 am

omg, Kim, I feel the EXACT same way! I always felt like I had to be doing something with all this “free time”, but that’s the whole idea, right?.. to relax. We quit our jobs because they weren’t fullfilling enough, and yet, when we go thru with it, we still feel the need to stress ourselves out with meaningless things. I try to take at least a day or two NOT doing school work to refresh my mind, and the other times, doing as much as I can. I can SO relate! on another note, my friend, Jackie, is the spa director at Brentwood!! she’s awesome 🙂 Glad you had a nice night!!

Karen { Just Because } continued …

I can’t get enough of this session!  I have just felt really creatively inspired lately and Karen was up for anything.  That combination is magic.  My good friend and fabulous photographer, Michelle Loewen, sent me a note and said “i LOVE how inspired you seem and i love how your style is so uniquely you. its so developing and its so beautiful.”  Those words spoke to me.  As a photographer, as an artist, you are always searching and growing and I have felt like I was experiencing a major growth spurt over the past year, and it is so nice to have that recognized.

Here are just a few more of Karen, and a couple of her alter ego 😉

Vanessa WattersApril 8, 2010 - 5:14 pm

Karen { Just Because }

In the past few weeks I have been a social butterfly.  Networking and getting out and meeting fabulous photographers and local business owners in beautiful Victoria.  I attended a wonderful conference in Vancouver for photographers called Image Quest which helped me examine my business in brand new ways.  I was so inspired by the incredible line up of speakers: Jasmine Star, Miranda and Riley of Blue Olive Photography, Dane Sanders, and Mitche Graf to name a few.  I was able to network even more and finally meet some of my amazing ‘internet’ friends in person!  FINALLY!

A few months ago I met with Karen McNeil an awesome local photographer, who has quickly become a new friend 🙂  Karen recently hosted a fabulous networking event called Photo Social, with her business partner Jen Steele of Bella Boudoir.  It was a huge hit and I hope to attend more of their events in the future.

It is always incredibly flattering when another photographer asks you to take their picture, so I was honoured when Karen asked me to take some fun headshots with her out in the “country”.  I believe I am a cowgirl at heart so this session was right up my alley.  One of my own personal prized possessions is a pair of my mom’s cowboy boots that she has had since she was 16.  I LOVE those boots !!  So a country chic session out in some stunning farmland … um YES PLEASE.  I am a huge lover of using ‘props’ in my photo sessions, so the fact that Karen brought along a vintage camera and trunk I knew we were off to a good start.

Well part one of the results are below.  Let me know what you think!!
