Sony has created exceptional cameras over the years. However, in 2025, the company only introduced two photo-centric cameras, the A7 V and the A1 II. This left the community wanting more, with many wondering when they will see updated models of the RX100 series or the A7C series. With the new year just kicking off, there is hope that Sony will launch the following cameras as part of its upgrades.
According to Sony Alpha Rumors, the company is likely to introduce some of these models in 2026. While nothing is confirmed, multiple sources and discussions indicate that a refreshed lineup for photographers will be available soon. Here’s a look at our current standing.
Sony A7R VI
The model has one of the highest chances of seeing a launch in 2026. The A7R IV and A7R V were introduced in 2022, and the A7R IV was launched in 2019. With a rough 4-year gap, it seems like the right time to launch the A7 VI. The previous models shared the same 61MP sensor, with many feeling that the sensor needs a significant upgrade. The A7R series packs high resolution, so a new 61MP partially stacked sensor is the next option. This includes improved readout speed, reduced rolling shutter, and a one-stop improvement in medium to low ISO performance. This will also align with Sony’s sensor direction. The chances of the launch are pretty high, since the camera has been a long time coming.
Sony RX100 VIII
With more compact cameras making a return, Sony saw the opportunity to review its high-end point-and-shoot camera with RX1R III. This means that the RX100 series also stands a chance. The RX100 VII was introduced over six years ago, and its absence is noticeable in the market. The RX100 VIII also has a higher chance of being introduced, but with a simpler body. However, there is hope that it also includes better autofocus, modern connectivity, and meaningful sensor updates.
Sony A6900
Sony’s APS-C lineup has also not seen an update in a while. The a6700 was introduced in 2023 and has been a great option for those who cannot afford the higher-end offerings. However, the chances of the a6900 launching now are slimmer, since many photographers can rely on older full-frame cameras. But that does not mean Sony will not update the APS-C series. If the company introduces this model, it is likely to improve the sensor, as well as the EVF, burst rate, and ergonomics.
Lenses
Models such as the A7C series remain uncertain, while the A7S series struggles to establish its identity. But while some cameras are uncertain, the lenses are not. Most people believe that Sony will introduce new optics with a focus on zoom lenses. Models that are likely to be launched include:
- 100-400mm f4.0 GM
- 100-400mm G (variable aperture)
- 18-26mm f2 GM
Like the lenses, there are some models that people are keen on seeing from Sony, but it appears that won’t happen anytime soon.
- A $1,900 “mini A1 II”
- A vintage Minolta-styled full-frame camera
- A true medium-format Sony system
- A new RX10 APS-C camera
For now, the expected cameras showcase models with better sensors, improved bodies, and greater refinement. Since they launched only 3 photo cameras last year, we think they may introduce similar numbers, if not more.
