Portrait photography has been one of the prominent genres in the medium. Making one’s portrait is as much about one’s vision of that person as it is about the gear. In the film era, one could obtain the best photographs in studios, but with the proliferation of smartphones, the understanding of portraits shifted, with more candid poses replacing formal settings. If you are someone who is looking to get the best of both worlds, here is a look at a few models that can be of help.
Editor’s Note: We chose these cameras based on the color depth that the sensors offer. It’s incredible.
Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R

The S1R is for portrait photographers who prefer the robustness of DSLRs over the compactness of mirrorless bodies. The camera houses a 47MP full-frame sensor that can record 4K videos at 60fps. The device has a 5,760K OLED LVF, 9fps Burst, and Advanced DFD + AI. In addition, you get a 96MP high-resolution mode, which can be ideal if you also shoot fashion. The camera is targeted at professionals, and so, it can withstand rain pretty well. The autofocus performance is good, but it is behind Sony in some cases. As for image quality, you get versatile RAW files, which means you can adjust your files as needed. You can also recover details from shadows.
Nikon D850

The Nikon D850 is the only DSLR on this list that offers a more budget-friendly option for portrait photographers. The camera features a 45MP sensor, a burst rate of 7 frames per second (fps), and includes a 2.36 million-dot (2.36M) LCD. For videos, you get 4K at 30fps. The DSLR can withstand rain, and when paired with the right lens, it becomes a perfect outdoor camera. The autofocus is fast, but it is slightly behind its predecessor. As for the inages, the sensor is quite impressive, allowing photographers to capture good colors, sharpness, and dynamic range.
Leica Q2

The Leica Q2 is a compact camera designed for portrait photographers who prefer not to use additional lenses. The Q2 features a 47MP sensor, a 3.68MP EVF, and is weather-resistant. You also get a 28mm f1.7 fixed lens to get that gorgeous bokeh. The autofocus is quite fast, but it is slightly behind the fastest ones on Sony cameras. The face detection is just as great, and as we said, “In good lighting and with stagnant subjects, it works flawlessly.” You can get details from highlights and shadows, and the colors are great too. The high ISO output is also very clean.
These cameras have a different price range, so choose one that suits your needs and budget. However, remember, they are incredibly good.
