I began the review of Lomography Lomochrome Color 92 back in 2023 — like most other film photographers these days, I took my sweet time developing the film. This is one that I didn’t want to rush. This film is beautiful and embodies a look that I don’t see often captured in digital. Yesterday, I published articles about film experiences that I wouldn’t want to have again. But Lomography Lomochrome Color 92 is one that I truly can’t wait to have again.
For the record, I didn’t develop this film myself. Blue Moon Camera does it for the Phoblographer, and we recommend that everyon uses them. When shooting with this film, I’d often give it around a stop or so of extra light because it’s negative film. And when I was done with a roll, I’d wind it up and put it back in my fridge until I was ready to have it developed. Several rolls were shot with the Nikon F and the Leica M6.
This review is incredibly personal because 2023 was one of the darkest years of my life — and that’s when I started this review. I can see and immediately remember all of the emotional moments and times that I captured on film. These images encompass a past version of me trying my absolute best to make it through a very tough time.
So what can I say about Lomochrome Color 92? It’s got really muted but beautiful colors and when you shoot it in the right settings, it can make everything look like it came from out of a magazine. This film is designed to look a bit like Kodak Portra NC from what I understand. And that’s what you’ll get from it. I shot with it in a lot of really dimly lit situations — but I think that you’ll probably get your most gorgeous photos from this film if you shoot with it in daylight or in a studio with very controlled lighting.
Let’s break this down:
- Lomochrome Color 92 is for any photographer who really want to shoot portraiture more than anything else. I don’t really recommend it for street photography
- Make sure that you’ve got s lot of light
- You’re going to get very muted colors with a bit of grain, so get ready for that
- Be very particular about the lighting that you’re shooting in
- I truly recommend shooting this film with either a point and shoot or an SLR with electronics inside.
- Give it about a stop extra of light.
Most importantly, I can’t quite duplicate this look in digital at all — or at least it’s very difficult to do so.
Lomochrome Color 92 is one of the best film emulsions that I’ve used in the past few years. And if I were to shoot film again, I’d reach for it without question. It’s the best thing Lomo has done in years.
