Something I’ve seen Nikon doing ever since the launch of their Z9 camera a few years ago is a steady release of firmware for their cameras. What’s even nicer is that sometimes these firmware updates introduce features that Nikon typically used to release only via newer camera models, at least in their DSLR lineup. The Nikon Z8 firmware 3.0 update brings a plethora of features that will bring smiles to the faces of every photographer who owns this camera.

Every now and then, Nikon releases a firmware update that demonstrates the thoughtfulness behind their R&D teams. Firmware 3.0 for the Nikon Z8 isn’t just another bug fix update. It clearly shows that, lately, Nikon has been really listening to the needs of its photographers. This update gives Nikon Z8 owners more control over how they create images. Below are the main features that photographers can be delighted with once they upgrade their Z8 to this firmware version.
Ultra High Resolution Photos Combined With Focus-Shift

Firmware 2.0 introduced Pixel-Shift to the Nikon Z8, a feature that Nikon had previously introduced in their Nikon Zf model. This allowed users to capture up to 96-megapixel images in-camera with the Zf’s 24-megapixel sensor. Of course, the Z8 already had a feature called Focus-Shift, which is a way of stacking shots in-camera to achieve a much deeper in-focus image, particularly when shooting subjects with macro lenses. In firmware 3.0 on the Nikon Z8, you get to combine these two amazing techniques in one go.
Nikon is the first in the world to integrate Pixel-Shift and Focus-Shift, or AE-Bracketing techniques, into a camera without the use of external accessories. This comes to the Z8 via firmware 3.0. It’s like unlocking a higher level of detail. Textures appear more realistic, and even the smallest details in a subject start to pop out at you. When you include AE Bracketing, the camera handles challenging high-contrast scenes with precision. It balances highlights and shadows while also helping keep moiré out of the image. Nikon has also improved file management this time, automatically creating a new folder for each sequence.
Flexible Color Picture Control

Feeling jealous of X-photographers and their ability to generate film stock like JPEGs straight from their cameras? You can now get similar results with your Nikon Z8 too. Take a base image and tweak parameters such as hue, saturation, and contrast in NX Studio. You can then save that as your own custom look and send it directly to the camera. This way, you can shoot JPEGs that already look like a finished product. Simply upload your retro-looking photos directly to your client or social media feeds, eliminating the need for editing on your computer once you’re home. Given the large file sizes that the Z8 is capable of generating, you’ll appreciate this convenience. Stay tuned for an article coming up in the upcoming weeks if you want to really get into the world of Nikon Imaging Recipes.
In-Camera Focus Limiter

It’s great when your Z-mount lenses have a limiter switch that helps you control the focusing range of your lens for faster AF performance, but how great is it that you can do this with any Nikon Z lens now? Thanks to firmware 3.0, with the Nikon Z8, you can now set the focus limit range directly in the camera itself. For macro and wildlife photographers, this is an invaluable feature to have. Features like this are honestly why people upgrade camera models or even switch brands, so it’s great to see Nikon providing these enhancements to existing camera users via such firmware updates.
Other Key Features For Photographers

- You can now specify to the Nikon Z8 what type of subject to prioritize while shooting. This works not only when autofocus is on, but also in manual focus mode
- Manual focus has improved even further with the ability to select subject detection areas
- Focus in Live-View is now possible using the lens’s maximum aperture.
- Under Custom Settings, the [Zoom on/off] feature now allows for zooming up to 400%
- Custom wide-area AF settings have been increased to up to 135 different patterns
- A middle-ground [C15] framerate option has been added for high-speed photography, and you also get a [FINE] image-quality setting for use with High-Speed Frame Capture +
- You can now use external wired or wireless microphones when adding voice memos to your images
Firmware 3.0 doesn’t reinvent the Z8 but gosh it really does help it take your photography to another level if you’re someone who knows how to make use of all these additions. Kudos to Nikon; let’s hope they continue to offer such features to other cameras as well
