I’ve been shooting with Fujifilm cameras for fun and work since 2014. I was a bit of a latecomer to the system, buying my first X-Pro (first generation) about four years after its initial launch. What blew me away instantly was the film simulations that made straight-out-of-camera JPEGs viable in a way that I hadn’t experienced before. Now, 11 years later, I’m always looking for a new film recipe, and the Fuji X Recipe Generator helps you have a new look to try in your pocket.

The Big Picture: Fuji X Recipe Generator is a Must-Try Applet for Fujifilm Enthusiasts

Fujifilm power-users and budding enthusiasts alike flock to the Fuji’s APS-C cameras for the whimsy that Fujifilm’s Film Simulations provide. But shortly after trying your own custom film recipe, you’ll like spend countless hours searching the internet for the perfect custom recipe for your specific camera. The Fuji X Recipe helps cut the search down into a simple tool that gives the option of a fully randomized recommendation or a choose-your-own-journey recipe generator. The UI is clean and straightforward, keeping the process of discovery super simple, and all for the low price of free-ninety-nine (but you should really tip the creator).

The Experience: Cooking up Looks with the Fuji X Recipe Generator

When I first began experimenting with Fujifilm Film Simulation recipes, I would spend hours searching for free options online and hoping for the best. Depending on your source, there was either a lot of guidance on how to achieve the look, or it was up to you to figure it out. The Fuji X Recipe Generator takes a lot of the guesswork out by walking you through a nine-question process to help you achieve the look you envision. The applet will walk you through the process, starting with the camera and processor combination that you will be using with the recipe, and then getting down to the more aesthetic characteristics, including any real-world film emulsions you’d like to use as a base. After answering a few more questions about your intended subject, color and contrast preferences, and even your intended output result (i.e., whether the images will be printed, used commercially, or just posted on social media), the Fuji X Recipe Generator will provide the instructions needed to dial it in on your device – step by step.

In practice, this is a super process that takes less than a few minutes to dial in on your camera. I exclusively tested the applet with my Fujifilm X-Pro 3, using the applet’s save feature to create my looks while working (and not having my camera handy). All-in-all, I found myself spending quite a bit of my day just playing with the looks that the app would suggest from my prompts. If you suffer from decision fatigue, this might be a bug and not a feature, but they’ve even thought about that. The Fuji X Recipe Generator has a neat feature for those who might not know where to start. By simply entering your camera’s sensor, the applet will suggest a random film recipe based on your camera’s capabilities.
Image Quality
In my experience using the recipe generator, I found that the results ranged from fairly accurate to great. I found that when trying to recreate a specific film emulsion, in my case Kodak Tri-X, the results largely depended on the lighting conditions (I probably should’ve put more attention on that option when I created the look), but it wasn’t all that difficult to make the necessary adjustments to get a result that I was happier with. And that’s really what this app excels at – a platform to dial in your creative vision. Much like cooking, these recipes provide you with a jumping-off point where you add your own twists and flavorings to the final look (we don’t do unseasoned chicken – not for dinner and certainly not for photos).
The sample gallery below highlights the three base recipes I used the most: a Cinematic recipe based on Pro Negative Standard, a Vintage Travel recipe based on Classic Chrome, and a Kodak Tri-X emulation based on Fujifilm Acros.

A Recipe for Creativity
Again, I’m a fan of Fujifilm’s early X-Trans Sensor cameras. They made me fall in love with the idea of getting a look straight out of the camera that was ready for sharing – with friends and clients alike. The Fuji X Recipe Generator is made for the photographer who wants to expand their creative horizons beyond what comes standard in their camera. While I will never say that the filter makes the image, the right filter will help a photographer express their vision of the world they intend to capture. The Fuji X Recipe Generator can help cut through the noise of indecision to help photographers get to the real task at hand – making images.
Declaration of Journalistic Intent
The Phoblographer is one of the last standing dedicated photography publications that speaks to both art and tech in our articles. We put declarations up front in our reviews to adhere to journalistic standards that several publications abide by. These help you understand a lot more about what we do:
- At the time of publishing this review, Fuji X Recipe Generator isn’t running direct-sold advertising with the Phoblographer. This doesn’t affect our reviews anyway and it never has in our 15 years of publishing our articles. This article is in no way sponsored.
- Note that this isn’t necessarily our final review of the unit. It will be updated, and it’s more of an in-progress review than anything. In fact, almost all our reviews are like this.
- None of the reviews on the Phoblographer are sponsored. That’s against FTC laws, and we adhere to them just the same way that newspapers, magazines, and corporate publications do.
- FUJI X RECIPE GENERATOR loaned the unit and accessories to the Phoblographer for review (OR DECLARE IF ITS FOR KEEPS). There was no money exchange between us or their 3rd party partners and the Phoblographer for this to happen. Manufacturers trust the Phoblographer’s reviews, as they are incredibly blunt.
- FUJI X RECIPE GENERATOR knows that it cannot influence the site’s reviews. If we don’t like something or if we have issues with it, we’ll let our readers know.
- The Phoblographer’s standards for reviewing products have become much stricter. After having the world’s largest database of real-world lens reviews, we choose not to review anything we don’t find innovative or unique, and in many cases, products that lack weather resistance. Unless something is very unique, we probably won’t touch it.
- In recent years, brands have withheld NDA information from us or stopped working with us because they feel they cannot control our coverage. These days, many brands will not give products to the press unless they get favorable coverage. In other situations, we’ve stopped working with several brands for ethical issues. Either way, we report as honestly and rawly as humanity allows.
- At the time of publishing, the Phoblographer is the only photography publication that is a member of Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative. We champion human-made art and are frank with our audience. We are also the only photography publication that labels when an image is edited or not.
