Panasonic recently introduced the Lumix S1R II and the ZS99, both cameras being at two different ends of the spectrum. While one is a 44MP full-frame camera for professionals, the other is a compact camera with a 20MP 1/2.3-incg BSI-CMOS sensor designed for casual shooters and enthusiasts. It isn’t hard to judge why the Panasonic Lumix ZS99 became a hit amongst young photographers, with many still looking it up on Google to purchase it. It now appears that Panasonic has reportedly registered a new camera, which could add to the growing compact camera lineup.
According to Mirrorless Rumors, this is the third camera registered by Panasonic, which happened on February 28. While two of the three are said to be cinema cameras, the report is unsure about the other two. There is already an inclination that one of the two cameras could be compact, especially since the small cameras are gaining momentum. In another report, we mentioned how Panasonic is keen to cater to the young audience, many of whom do not need a big setup. Just a fixed lens with a powerful processor.

Our hope, in this regard, would be to see a new model in the LX100 series. The first LX100 was launched in 2014, while the LX100 II was released four years later. Since then, we haven’t heard much from the manufacturers. Both LX100 and LX100 II featured Four Third sensors, with the former boasting 12MP resolution, and the latter pumping up to 17MP. Other than that, the lens remained the same 24-75mm f/1.7-2.8, so did the 2.76 M-dot equivalent electronic viewfinder. There was a slight improvement in the resolution of the 3-inch LCD in the LX100 II, but that was abysmal. Other than that, there weren’t too many changes.
This is exactly why we need the LX100 III, but this time, it is a far superior version of the camera, and it must have the following:
- At least a 25MP Four Thirds sensor, which can help get more details and better dynamic range
- More pleasing ISO performance at night
- Improved and faster autofocus, which will help street photographers. At least, it should be on par with Leica’s DLUX series
- The LX100 III must have an AI chip for scene and face recognition
- More log profiles for creative liberty
- Enhance in-camera processing options for RAW files

- While the Panasonic LX100 series is loved by many, the design of the camera could be a challenge for people with larger hands. So, a slight increase in size would be great. Also, improved dials and more customised controls
- Better weather resistance and stronger built
- Provision for cloud storage options directly into the camera
- Priced lower than $1000
The LX100 series is pretty great in every way, which is why many continue to go after it even today. However, seeing the LX series, Leica also worked on its own Four Thirds sensors for professional photographers, and it became the DLUX cameras. So, if Panasonic wants to release a new compact camera, they have to give us something that is as good as a Leica, but at a lower price. Canon also has its own new PowerShot series, but the V1 caters to more hybrid users than photographers. The launch of GFX100 RF proves that many serious photographers also want better processors in a compact body, and Panasonic has the chance to target them with a new compact camera series.
The ZS99 is a perfect toy camera for anyone who wants to have fun, but the Panasonic LX100 III could be ideal to bridge the gap between professionals and retro compact cameras. However, whether or not the company thinks the same way will be revealed soon.
